What’s a good lens for action, wildlife and sport?

One of the main challenges for sports and action photographers is that they are photographing moving subjects. Most beginners will attempt to shoot a sports event with their all-round lens. However, unless you like the effect of motion blur, you will need to look at purchasing a fast lens for sports, action and wildlife photography.

The photographic style’s lens requirements

Ideally the lens used for sports and action photography will be a telephoto lens. The length of the telephoto lens required will depend on what the user is intending to shoot. The further away the action the longer the lens required.

  • A fast lens is one that has a low aperture f number. For example, a lens that offers f/2.8 is faster than an f/4-5.6
  • A fast lens motor is also important as it can autofocus quickly
