Focus Shift - May 2025
May 2025 ushered in a host of exciting new launches and announcements across the world of photography and videography, with a strong focus on innovation, hybrid capabilities and compact power. From medium format milestones to cinematic tools tailored for the modern filmmaker, this month proved once again that camera manufacturers are not slowing down. Here’s a detailed round-up of the standout releases.
Fujifilm GFX100RFPerhaps the most attention-grabbing release of May was the Fujifilm GFX100RF. This is Fujifilm’s boldest step yet in bringing the power of medium format to a wider, more mobile audience. Instead of building a new interchangeable lens camera, Fujifilm opted for a fixed-lens design wrapped around the renowned 102 megapixel large format sensor. The GFX100RF is surprisingly compact for its sensor class, with a design language that calls back to Fujifilm’s classic rangefinders, yet under the hood it’s an entirely modern machine. Featuring phase detection autofocus across the frame, in-body image stabilisation and a weather-sealed build, it is clearly built for professionals looking to work quickly and efficiently without sacrificing image quality. The fixed lens is a 55mm equivalent with a wide aperture and optical precision to match the resolving power of the sensor. It’s a bold and niche product, but one that cements Fujifilm’s commitment to medium format leadership.
Fujifilm X half
In a move that delighted analogue fans and lovers of compact gear, Fujifilm announced the X half. It’s a half-frame digital camera that plays heavily on retro charm, both in design and in concept. Rather than attempting to chase the highest resolution or fastest frame rates, the X-Half is about fun, creativity and portability. It uses the familiar X-Trans sensor found in many of Fujifilm’s APS-C bodies, but the key differentiator is its vertical half-frame shooting style. This gives users double the number of frames per memory card and encourages a new way of seeing, ideal for casual shooting or creative projects. Controls are tactile and intuitive, with dials for shutter speed and exposure compensation sitting proudly atop the camera. The fixed lens is bright and sharp, and film simulations are front and centre. In short, the X-Half is designed to be both a playful companion and a serious creative tool.
Sony FX2
Sony continued its dominance in the cinema camera space with the launch of the FX2, a follow-up to the FX3 aimed squarely at solo filmmakers and content creators who demand high-end performance in a compact form factor. The FX2 brings a host of refinements including a tilting electronic viewfinder, full-size HDMI output and support for 32-bit float audio recording, eliminating the need for precise input level settings during capture. It records 4K at up to 120fps with 10-bit 4:2:2 internal encoding, and also supports external RAW recording. Autofocus performance is class-leading, particularly for tracking faces and eyes in complex environments. The body design is robust and designed to be rigged easily with cages, monitors and mics, while the fan-based cooling system ensures long takes without overheating. With the FX2, Sony reinforces its commitment to creators who value mobility without compromise.
Panasonic LUMIX S1II and S1IIE
May also saw the official debut of the Panasonic LUMIX S1II and its sibling, the S1IIEI. These full-frame hybrids build upon the legacy of the original S1, adding stronger video features and autofocus refinements that will appeal to both filmmakers and stills photographers. The core of the camera is a newly developed 24 megapixel sensor with improved dynamic range and reduced rolling shutter. Panasonic’s colour science has always been well-regarded and the S1II continues that tradition with rich tones straight out of camera. The standout feature, however, is the camera’s ability to record 6K video internally in 10-bit, with advanced heat management for unlimited recording. The S1IIE model adds extra connectivity options for broadcast and streaming workflows, including wired IP streaming and USB-SSD recording. Both bodies offer dual image stabilisation, fast autofocus via DFD technology and dual card slots for professional reliability. For hybrid shooters who demand versatility, the S1II and S1IIE are among the most capable options on the market.
Panasonic S1RII
Though technically announced earlier in the year, May saw the S1RII make its way into photographers’ hands, with reviews and early impressions surfacing widely. This is Panasonic’s high-resolution flagship, offering a 44 megapixel full-frame sensor tailored for detail-rich stills work. Landscape, studio and commercial photographers are the clear target audience here, and the camera does not disappoint. Images show outstanding sharpness and tonal depth, while colour fidelity remains a strong suit. The autofocus system has been refined over the original S1R, particularly in subject tracking, and the inclusion of high-resolution multi-shot modes allows for staggering levels of detail when tripod-mounted. Video features are more limited than in the S1II, reinforcing the S1RII’s positioning as a photography-first body. Build quality is exceptional, with a robust magnesium alloy shell and full weather sealing. The S1RII is not aimed at the average user, but for those needing precision and resolution, it is an exceptional tool.
Panasonic LUMIX 24-60mm F2.8 S
Accompanying its new camera bodies, Panasonic released a compact yet bright standard zoom lens for the L-Mount system. The LUMIX 24-60mm F2.8 S covers a versatile focal range that makes it ideal for everything from events to travel, and its constant f/2.8 aperture ensures strong low-light performance and consistent exposure during zooming. Optically, it is a strong performer, with minimal distortion and excellent sharpness throughout the zoom range. Autofocus is fast and silent, making it suitable for both stills and video use, while the lens itself is weather sealed to match the durability of the S-series bodies. This lens fills a much-needed gap in Panasonic’s lens lineup, offering a more compact alternative to bulkier professional zooms without compromising on image quality.
Leica M11‑P Safari Edition
Leica unveiled a striking new variant of its flagship M11‑P rangefinder in olive‑green, channeling its classic Safari finishes from as far back as the 1970s. The M11‑P Safari shares the full‑frame 60 MP BSI CMOS sensor, Maestro III processor and hardware‑based Content Credentials of the standard model. What sets it apart is the aesthetic: solid brass top and base plates finished in matte olive‑green, matching leatherette and battery cover, silver‑accented controls and subtle branding (no red dot) for a discreet, distinguished look.
DJI Mavic 4 Pro
On the drone front, DJI made headlines with the unveiling of the Mavic 4 Pro, a major update to one of the most successful drone lines ever. The Mavic 4 Pro introduces a 100 megapixel main sensor capable of shooting high-resolution stills and detailed 6K video. Flight time has been extended to an impressive 51 minutes under ideal conditions, thanks to an updated battery system and more efficient motors. The new obstacle avoidance system uses omnidirectional sensors with advanced AI to help the drone navigate complex environments autonomously. Camera performance is aided by a new optical stabilisation module, producing footage that remains rock steady even in breezy conditions. With professional use in mind, DJI has also improved the transmission system for greater range and reliability. The Mavic 4 Pro is squarely aimed at aerial photographers and filmmakers who require the very best image quality in a portable package.
Sony GP VPT3 Multi Function Shooting Grip
Think of this as a 3 in 1 tool for vloggers and solo creators. In Grip mode it provides stable handheld operation, complete with easy reach buttons and a flexible, tilting head that lets you switch between forward and selfie shooting in an instant. Flip it open and it becomes a compact tripod. Unsnap the remote commander and you’re in full wireless control. Supporting cameras up to 1.5 kg (around 3.3 lb) and compatible with both Alpha and ZV series cameras.
Sony RMT VP2 Wireless Remote Commander
Sony introduced the RMT VP2 as a detachable, Bluetooth powered remote that adds real freedom when shooting solo or setting up long exposures. It slips neatly into the GP VPT3 grip or works independently for up to around 10 metres of control, allowing you to start and stop movie recording, trigger the shutter, tweak zoom or focus, toggle autofocus and even use a programmable C1 button. Ideal for group portraits or low light scenes where camera shake matters, it supports both stills and video, and works with Xperia smartphones too.
Yashica Arrives at London Camera Exchange
In a delightful surprise for analogue fans and lovers of retro tech, May saw the arrival of Yashica’s latest digital range at London Camera Exchange. Once a household name synonymous with film-era innovation, Yashica has re-emerged with a line of delightfully quirky digital compacts aimed squarely at the design-conscious and creatively curious.
The most eye-catching of the new arrivals is undoubtedly the DZ-100 Hello Kitty Compact Camera. It’s an unapologetically fun and nostalgic piece of kit, pairing Yashica’s throwback digital aesthetic with one of the most iconic characters in pop culture. Despite its novelty appeal, the DZ-100 is surprisingly functional, offering a fixed wide-angle lens, built-in flash and simple stills and video capture, all wrapped up in a playful pink-and-white shell. It’s perfect for gifting or for casual snaps that don’t take themselves too seriously.
Joining the DZ-100 is the DigiMate 100, a pocket-sized digital camera that channels the early-2000s point-and-shoot vibe with modern reliability. It has a boxy, metallic design that feels pleasingly vintage in the hand, and while it won’t compete with flagship smartphone cameras, it captures with a character and immediacy that’s hard to replicate. It’s built for candid shooting, travel journalling and embracing imperfection.
Lastly, the City Series offers a slightly more serious take on the compact revival. With a minimalist aluminium shell and simple control layout, it evokes the spirit of old Yashica T-series cameras but with a purely digital heart. It includes a modest zoom lens, basic exposure controls and a pleasing colour rendering straight out of camera. It’s the kind of camera that invites casual experimentation and creative shooting without the distractions of apps and filters.
May 2025 has proven to be a vibrant and ambitious month for new photography gear, offering something for every kind of shooter. Whether it’s medium format minimalism, high-resolution stills, cinematic flexibility or aerial excellence, the latest announcements set a strong tone for the rest of the year.
