The NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II represents a complete reimagining of one of Nikon's most versatile professional zooms. In fact, this is the world's first professional full-frame 24-70mm f/2.8 lens with an internal zoom mechanism, and at just 675 g it also takes the title of the lightest in its category. The result is a lens that feels every bit as dependable as its predecessor, but with a host of refinements that make it an even more powerful tool for both stills and video.

Photographers will immediately notice the difference when zooming. Because the barrel no longer extends, there is no shift in the centre of gravity, which means that handheld shooting feels steadier and more natural. Video shooters will also appreciate not having to rebalance the lens when using a gimbal, and the reduced focus breathing ensures that focus pulls and transitions look more cinematic. The new internal design not only improves handling but also increases durability, as fewer moving parts are exposed. Combined with Nikon's professional-grade weather sealing, this makes the lens an ideal choice for those who need reliability in the field.

Performance has taken a major step forward thanks to Nikon's latest multi-focusing system and the introduction of the Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor. This is the first zoom lens in the Z line-up to benefit from this technology, delivering autofocus performance that is five times faster, up to fifty percent quieter, and with tracking that responds sixty percent quicker when zooming. Whether working with fast-moving subjects or capturing delicate moments in low light, the lens ensures precise, responsive focusing that never distracts from the creative process.

Image quality has also been refined through a new S-line optical construction. By using fewer elements to greater effect, the design shapes light more efficiently, ensuring maximum sharpness and clarity across the frame. Dual-sided aspherical elements and ED glass combine with Nikon's advanced Meso Amorphous and ARNEO coatings to eliminate flare and ghosting, allowing photographers to shoot confidently even when working directly into harsh light sources. The 11-blade rounded aperture produces bokeh that is beautifully circular, smoothly graded and highly pleasing, lending portraits and close-ups an unmistakable depth.

Close focusing has been enhanced to expand creative possibilities. At 24mm, the lens can focus as close as 0.24 m, while at 70mm the minimum distance is just 0.33 m, offering a maximum magnification of 0.32x. These improvements mean photographers can frame more intimate details without sacrificing composition, and because the barrel never extends, working distances remain consistent and comfortable.

Practical touches complete the design. The de-clickable control ring can be set to provide tactile feedback for stills or smooth, silent operation for video, while the focus-limit switch allows the focusing range to be restricted for faster operation at closer distances. The newly designed HB-117 lens hood includes a filter adjustment window, a small but valuable addition that makes it far easier to work with rotating filters, particularly variable ND filters during video shoots.
