On its own, it delivers a constant F2.8 aperture across an impressive focal range of 100-400mm equivalent, ensuring that clarity and brightness are maintained throughout the zoom. For those who need to reach even further, pairing it with the dedicated 2x teleconverter extends that reach to 800mm equivalent, with an effective F5.6 aperture that still delivers stunning detail and exceptional control.

What truly sets this lens apart is its constant F2.8 aperture, which opens up new possibilities in challenging light. Wildlife photographers will particularly appreciate the ability to use faster shutter speeds at lower ISO settings, allowing them to capture birds and animals in their natural behaviour during the dim light of dawn or the warm glow of sunset. Yet this isn't a lens that is limited to wildlife alone. Its wide focal range makes it equally suited for landscape work, offering sharp, vivid results across sweeping vistas as well as distant details, all from a single lens.

The optical design is just as impressive as its performance. A complex construction of 21 elements in 13 groups, including a large-diameter EDA lens and two Super ED elements, ensures rich, high-contrast results with minimal flare or colour fringing. The addition of the latest ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) Coating II further enhances performance in backlit conditions, suppressing ghosting and ensuring clarity even when shooting into direct sunlight. Thanks to the internal zoom system, the centre of gravity remains stable throughout the zoom range, making it far more comfortable for handheld use and extended shooting sessions. Autofocus is both fast and precise, supporting up to 50 fps with AF tracking for those fleeting, action-packed moments.

Close-up performance is another area where this lens excels. With a closest focusing distance of just 0.78 metres across all zoom settings, it becomes a highly capable tool for tele-macro photography. The maximum image magnification of 0.5x equivalent can be pushed to 1x when paired with the 2x teleconverter, making it an ideal choice for photographing insects and other subjects that are difficult to approach. Focus stacking is fully supported, enabling photographers to achieve incredible depth of field in detailed macro work.

Stability is often the greatest challenge when working with super telephoto lenses, but here the 5-axis sync IS system provides a huge advantage. Working seamlessly with the in-body stabilisation of compatible OM SYSTEM cameras, it delivers up to 7.0 stops of compensation at 400mm equivalent - the highest level available anywhere. Not only does this reduce blur from camera shake, but it also helps keep subjects steady in the frame, making composition and tracking far easier during handheld telephoto shooting.

Despite its advanced capabilities, the lens remains surprisingly portable. Weighing around 1,075 g without the tripod mount, it is compact and light for its class, offering excellent mobility when travelling or tracking fast-moving subjects. Durability has not been compromised either. With IP53-rated splash and dust resistance, a freezeproof design down to -10°C, and a fluorine coating on the front element to repel water and dirt, the lens is more than capable of standing up to unpredictable conditions in the field. The addition of a heat-resistant barrel coating ensures that performance remains stable even in harsh, sun-drenched environments.

The handling of the lens is carefully considered, with details designed to support professional use. A rubberised, anti-slip zoom and focus ring allows precise control, while a focus limiter switch, focus mode switch and preset focus function provide rapid adjustment to suit changing situations. Four customisable L-Fn buttons can be programmed for essential functions and are positioned for easy access whether shooting horizontally or vertically. The supplied lens hood features a filter control window for adjusting polarising filters, and the detachable tripod mount is Arca-Swiss compatible, shaped for a secure grip when carrying the lens in hand.
