Nikon Z 9: The Unassailable Powerhouse
The Nikon Z 9, a professional mirrorless camera, defines its uniqueness through the fusion of speed, exceptional image quality, and seamless connectivity. A prime choice for photographers and filmmakers who demand versatility and superior performance, the Z9 marks its debut as Nikon's first mirrorless flagship camera.
Stacked Sensor and Powerful Processing Engine
At the heart of the Z 9 lies a groundbreaking FX-format 45.7MP BSI stacked CMOS sensor. This stacked structure increases readout speeds while reducing rolling shutter effects. Coupled with a BSI design, it ensures astounding clarity and reduces noise even at higher sensitivities. At 45.7MP, its high-resolution chip makes it an ideal choice for landscape, portrait, and other detail-intensive genres, while also paving the way for video recording up to an awe-inspiring 8K resolution. Known for its superior colour and detail rendering, this full-frame BSI sensor offers a native ISO 64-25600 range, which can be expanded to ISO 32-102400.
The EXPEED 7 Image Processor
Complementing the sensor is the advanced EXPEED 7 image processor, which delivers performance approximately 10 times faster than its predecessor, the Z 7II. Together with the stacked sensor, this engine produces smooth video performance, quick all-around handling, rapid burst shooting rates, impressive AF speeds, and a high buffer capacity.
Top continuous shooting speeds of 20 fps for raw images, 30 fps for JPEGs, and a staggering 120 fps for 11MP stills, all with comprehensive AF/AE performance.
Capable of buffering well beyond 1000 raw images in a single burst, allowing raw image sequences to be recorded for approximately 50 seconds continuously.
The electronic shutter provides a top shutter speed of 1/32,000 sec, perfect for bright conditions and wide apertures.
The stacked sensor architecture effectively reduces rolling shutter distortion, ensuring fast-moving subjects appear undistorted even at shutter speeds up to 1/32,000 sec.
AF calculations are processed at a blistering 120 fps rate, ensuring optimum performance during fast continuous shooting.
The new High-Efficiency RAW file format retains image quality akin to uncompressed raw files, but with file sizes approximately 30% smaller, for faster read/write speeds to the memory card.
Revolutionising photography with an Electronic Shutter-Only Design
The Z 9 relies only on its electronic shutter for all modes of capture, with recording speeds of up to 1/32,000 seconds. Thanks to its stacked structural design, it mitigates motion distortion, resulting in a true-to-life depiction of rapidly moving objects like golf clubs, baseball bats, and automobiles. Notably, despite the absence of a mechanical shutter, flash synchronisation up to 1/200 sec is still supported, along with high-speed sync functions.
By discarding the mechanical shutter, the Z 9 can operate in complete silence, eliminating concerns over mechanical shutter wear or breakdown. To inform the user when a photo has been taken, a shutter release sound can be added, with an adjustable volume to suit varied working environments.
Unprecedented speed and accuracy with intelligent Autofocus
493-Point Phase-Detection Autofocus System
The Nikon Z 9's 493-point phase-detection autofocus (AF) system, covering the full sensor area, provides swift and precise focusing performance. The high-speed communication of the Z interface, along with the sensor's speed, enables AF readings at up to 120 fps. This AF system also supports low-light conditions with a Starlight mode that allows focusing down to -8.5 EV, making it perfect for astrophotography, concert photography, and nighttime shooting.
New Subject Detection Algorithm and Deep Learning Technology
The Z 9's automatic Subject Detection utilises a new algorithm and deep learning technology to recognise nine distinct subject types, from humans and animals to planes and bicycles. When operating in Auto-Area AF, these subjects are automatically detected, focused on, and tracked, ensuring sharp focus as the subject moves across the frame. The Eye-Detection AF has been fine-tuned for improved accuracy and refined recognition of eyes in the scene, regardless of their size within the image frame.
The Z 9 also sees the debut of the 3D Tracking mode in a Nikon mirrorless camera. This popular focusing mode on Nikon's DSLRs works alongside subject detection capabilities to lock onto fast and unpredictably moving subjects. Additionally, there are three Dynamic-Area AF modes, offering a range of focus area sizes to cater to a wider variety of moving subject types.
High-Definition Video Recording in 8K and 4K
The Z 9, in addition to its high-end photo features, is Nikon's most capable video camera, offering a range of resolutions and frame rates up to 8K. With full pixel readout, UHD 8K 30p video can be recorded, with continuous shooting possible for approximately 2 hours and 5 minutes. Full-frame 4K recording is also available at up to 120p for slow-motion playback. Using an 8K area, oversampled UHD 4K recording can be achieved at up to 30p for improved sharpness and detail. Moreover, high-resolution frame grabs can be recorded in-camera from 8K and 4K videos, producing 33MP or 11MP stills, respectively.
Crystal clear internal recording with ProRes and H.265 10-Bit
The Nikon Z 9 offers internal recording in 10-bit colour with 4:2:2 sampling, harnessing the power of ProRes 422 HQ and H.265 codecs. Depending on your workflow requirements, you can also use H.264 and 4:2:0 colour. The camera also features a 10-bit N-Log setting and a Flat colour profile to provide greater flexibility for colour grading in post. Plus, the HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) setting makes it possible to produce HDR-ready content directly from the camera, streamlining your workflow.
Real-Live Viewfinder and Four-Axis Tilting LCD
Equipped with an advanced EVF that uses a quad-VGA panel, the Nikon Z 9 can adjust its luminance up to 3000 cd/m2, ensuring clarity even in brightly lit conditions. The dual-stream technology used in conjunction with this EVF allows blackout-free viewing during continuous shooting, enhancing your shooting experience.
Setting a new milestone for Nikon, the Z 9 features a 3.2" four-axis tilting touchscreen LCD, which can support shooting from high and low angles in both horizontal and vertical orientations. The four-way tilting capability facilitates easy viewing from various positions, while the user interface orientation automatically adjusts based on the camera's orientation, further improving the user experience.
Resilient, Robust Build
The Z 9 camera comes with two CFexpress Type B memory card slots, which allow for versatile data storage options and enable high-speed data read and write capabilities for rapid continuous shooting and high-definition 8K video recording.
Designed for professional use, the Z 9's distinct ergonomic shape incorporates a vertical grip for effortless transition between landscape and portrait shooting positions.
Built to match the dust and moisture resistance levels of the D6, the Z 9 features a sturdy, high-strength magnesium alloy frame that is 20% more compact than the preceding flagship DSLR body.
The camera comes with an EN-EL18d battery that provides an estimate of 700 shots per charge. Compatibility extends to other batteries from the EN-EL18 series.
The in-built Vibration Reduction now supports Synchro VR, offering up to 6 stops of camera shake compensation when paired with specific Z lenses.
The VR safety lock firmly secures the sensor and VR mechanism to prevent potential damage from movement during transportation.
To reduce dust contact with the sensor, the Z 9 integrates a sensor shield that guards the sensor surface when swapping lenses. A dual electro-conductive and fluorine coating on the optical filter that covers the sensor provides extra dust prevention.
Backlit buttons facilitate easier navigation and button identification in low-light environments.
A voice memo feature allows for recording brief spoken notes while shooting.
